glen (noun) a narrow valley, often with a watercourse running through it.
Scotland is known for its stunning glens; Glencoe, Glenshee and the Great Glen are a few that spring to mind. Our local glen is not quite as spectacular, but what it lacks in size and drama it makes up for in charm and tranquillity.
Comprising of just over 2 hectares (around 5 acres) tree species include Scots Pine, ash and sycamore along with holly, field maple, hazel, blackthorn, dogwood, elder, guelder rose, hawthorn, lime, elm and oak.
The woodland is home to many bird species including dunnock, blue tit, coal tit, great tit, goldfinch, and chaffinch. Today Finlay and I were excited to see a bullfinch on our wander through. One day we hope to see a great spotted woodpecker, which is known to live here.
We also found some impressive-looking fungi growing on a tree trunk.
This is a beautiful natural area right on our family’s doorstep that I feel I’ve taken for granted. I’m grateful to 30 Days Wild for inspiring me to seek out and explore our local gems.
